Readers' Choice: Taste of India
There are a number of good South Asian places in town with tasty takeout and perfunctory atmosphere (carpeting and a Hindu sculpture do not a restaurant make). But Bombay Bistro is the rare experience in local Indian dining that persuades you to take off your coat and stay awhile. With a clear glass facade reflecting the art deco Foshay Tower, and two soldier statuettes greeting you on the way in, the low-ceilinged banquet room comfortably accommodates a weekday rush for the lunch buffet (11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.), with more advanced Indophiles favoring the "Weekend Food Fair Lunch Buffet" Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 3:00 p.m., featuring a hand-picked variety of regional specialties from the subcontinent: a vegetable curry bread from Mumbai called pav bhaji, fried dough filled with spiced potatoes called paani poori, and other street snacks. Tasty, yes. But evenings are chill time, with soft-spoken couples sipping mango lassis in soft upholstered armchairs under chandeliers, or ordering something harder from the full bar, and dining on the staples of Indian cuisine: rich and velvety saag paneer, succulent lamb. The full menu of meat, seafood, and vegetarian dishes comes with gracious service, and the food always seems to arrive sooner than you'd expect.
