Dustin Schlatter

Dustin Schlatter
Readers' Choice: Kyle Okposo
It was a remarkably dismal year for most Gopher sports teams. Glen Mason's gridiron follies led to a humiliating 38-7 meltdown against Texas Tech in the Insight Bowl. Dan Monson assembled a hoops squad that seemed more likely to suit up for Hibbing Community College. Even the Gopher women's basketball team had an off year, compiling a ho-hum 17-15 record and missing the NCAA tournament. Thank goodness for the Gopher wrestling team. J Robinson's squad put together yet another impressive season, culminating with its third national title in seven years. And no wrestler was more dominant than sophomore Dustin Schlatter. The 149-pounder capped a remarkable 2005-06 campaign by winning a national title, becoming the first Gopher freshman ever to achieve such a feat. There was no sophomore slump, either. This year, Schlatter was the most dominating wrestler in the country, going undefeated and earning nine technical falls en route to a second national title. We're not sure what the Massillon, Ohio, native intends to do for an encore, but if he wants to give the competition a fighting chance, he should consider moving up a weight class.
