The great sushi war currently raging in downtown Minneapolis has resulted in an East-meets-West dining experience worth shouting about: sushi happy hour. Normally, Japanese is a dish best served to small appetites with deep pockets. At three or four bucks a roll, however, even the most gluttonous raw fish lovers can enjoy the addictive little nuggets at nontraditional prices, and thus engage in the down-home (and very non-Japanese) art of digging in. The primary players here are Origami and Nami, both of which deserve their reputations for rolling some of the best sushi in town. But happy hour isn't about quality, it's about value. In that department Koyi Sushi is the Warehouse District sushi bar nonpareil. Monday through Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., a paltry $3.75 will nab you unagi maki (eel and avocado), a Rock and Roll (smoked salmon and mango), or any other roll from a modest after-work menu that swings happily from traditional to experimental. Throw in $2 domestics and $4.50 sake and martinis, and the hour becomes infinitely happier. Hint: For the ultimate sushi happy-hour experience, grab a seat at the handsome bar (the ample elbow room is another side effect of the sushi turf battle), and chat up the friendly chefs.
