BEST GYM - 2006
The Midtown YWCA might very well be the most diverse spot in all of Minnesota. Spend any time in any of the gym's five tidy locker rooms, and you're bound to overhear conversations in as many as six different languages in a single night. The Midtown Health and Fitness Center is also the country's largest YWCA, sporting a lap and leisure pool, a whirlpool, an aerobics studio, and the city's largest indoor track. And while the Fit Kids' Gym and kids' pool (with its giant curly slide) provide plenty of entertainment for the tots, the Midtown offers free babysitting service for those hoping to catch some alone time with the lat pull-down. Sure, during gym rush hour you might have to wait more than 15 minutes for the elliptical machines or treadmills. But a reasonably priced Y membership ($47 monthly for a single adult, $87 family; low-income scholarships are available) includes a range of classes from hip-hop dance to body pump to step, which may appease those who don't like waiting for their workout. Plus, your membership fee goes toward a good cause—eliminating racism and empowering women—instead of toward a lifetime supply of bronzing gel for the exer-rexic trainers at other local fitness centers.
