Sure, the ever-buzzing Lake Street-Excelsior Boulevard divide gets in the way, but with its miles of gleaming windows, stone-lined terrace, and north woods resort feel, Saturday or Sunday brunch at Tryg's almost qualifies as brunch on the waterfront. The menu's limited, but it's a toss-up as to which provides better fuel for a midday walk around Lake Calhoun, the egg- and hollandaise-topped hashes ($8 to $11; we think the cinnamon-scented chicken's the best), the smoke-charred burger, or the pound cake French toast ($8). That's right, French toast made from pound cake. It's as rich as it sounds, and demands to be offset by a rasher of thick-cut, applewood-smoked bacon. So you walk around the lake twice--can you think of a better way to while away a weekend.
