BEST WINE BAR - 2003
In the best of all possible worlds, a wine bar will have a wine list that inspires curiosity and delight. A list that appeals both to wine newcomers and old hands. A list that satisfies at various price points. Bar Lurcat offers all that and more. The list changes often but usually offers some 200 wines, including at least 40 available by the glass or in two-ounce tasting pours. It is always fascinating, and in the past it has included a Chapoutier Chateauneuf du Pape for a mere $2.50 a taste; an austere cremant de Loire from Baumard Millesime for $3.30 a taste; and many, many bottles that intrigue and delight (and, happily, start at prices in the high teens). Add to this an appealing room with high ceilings, the romance of so very many soaring chandeliers, and a bar menu that contains good burgers, fantastic fries, an ever-changing artisan cheese plate, and a variety of fish treats like salmon tartare, and you have a wine bar that is truly dazzling in ambition. And equally impressive in execution.
