BEST RENOVATION Minneapolis 2003 - Band Box Diner
Like so many senior citizens, the Band Box recently had a little age-defying work done. After being shut down for three months, the nearly 70-year-old Elliot Park staple reopened with its capacity doubled (from one dozen patrons to two!) and its greasy-spoon charm still intact. Right now the place looks like it's been dunked in bleach, but the smell of meat and onions on an open grill promise the walls and ceiling won't stay white forever. Diner purists need not fear; the joint is still so small that it hardly matters if you're sitting in smoking or non. Now if only Al's Breakfast could build out into the middle of 14th Avenue.
