If you're meandering around the neighborhood of the Grand Ole Creamery, it's practically impossible not to be pulled in by the divine smell of fresh waffle cones. Sweet, golden, and somehow both soft and crunchy, one of these without ice cream could leave you content. But then you'd be missing out on the cool, creamy yin to the waffle cone's yang. The ice cream here comes in a variety of textures, colors, and flavors--some classic, others more creative--and the hand-written list changes every week or so. That way the purveyors can make room for old favorites that have been on hiatus, and also try out newer, more experimental flavors. From butter pecan with a twist of rum to chocolate packed with chunks of fresh raspberries to simple sweet cream or fruity banana, there's something here for the adventurous, the decadent, and the conservative. Portions are plentiful, and when you make it to the malt ball in the tip of the cone it's like the dot on the exclamation point to the perfect summertime dessert. Though the line usually extends out the door, the wait is a breeze when you consider the reward.
