BEST COFFEE (BY THE POUND) - 2003
It wasn't until we became hooked on Peace Coffee's robust, smooth French Roast that we read about how it actually got to our kitchen. Grown under a canopy of trees (which provide a home to birds and bugs), these beans are not treated with chemical fertilizers or pesticides, nor cultivated in ways that harm the surrounding foliage. They are purchased at a "fair" price directly from farmer co-ops (not wholesalers) and, in a cutthroat global commodity market, Peace Coffee provides a living wage to area growers. Better yet, salespeople deliver it to our local co-op on bikes (no trucks, no packaging, no polluting). So, through our selfish desire for a good cuppa Joe, we've become what Peace Coffee calls "an enlightened coffee consumer who recognizes that his or her coffee selection has the potential for powerful economic and environmental change." Wow, all that before 8:00 a.m.
