BEST BEER SELECTION IN A BAR Minneapolis 2003 - William's Uptown Pub & Peanut Bar
2911 Hennepin Ave. S.
Minneapolis, MN 55408
There's a tiny wine list on the back of the beverage menu, and a few bottles of booze sit behind the bar upstairs, a half-filled bottle of Bombay Sapphire gin looking like a lonely blue beacon through the smoky haze. And we swear we saw people drinking liters of pop one Saturday afternoon. To us, that's like ordering a burger at the Oceanaire. Why bother? Nine hundred and ninety-nine times out of a thousand, if you're at William's, it's about the beer. With 300 bottles upstairs in the restaurant, and 70-plus taps downstairs in the Peanut Bar, the selection covers everything from Abbey Ale Tripel to Zima, earning raves from visitors who give it high marks on hops-related databases like www.pubcrawler.com, not to mention the locals who pack the place every weekend. The beer prices skew toward the high end, but there are plenty of culinary loss leaders to compensate, like the $1.50 burger and fries combo on weekends, or "Spaghetti Float Night," which pairs a liter of spaghetti with the purchase of a liter of beer. The food can sometimes make Old Chicago look like RockStar. But it's great for soaking up the suds. And that's why you're there, right?
