Harry Seymour Crump

No less august an authority than the New York Times has taken to referring to him as the "legendary" Harry Seymour Crump. The Hennepin County District Judge earned the appellation in November, when he stunned Major League Baseball's oligarchs by ruling that the Minnesota Twins were contractually obligated to play out the 2002 season in the Metrodome. We don't pretend to know diddly about the legal merits of Crump's decision, but it sure did feel good to watch baseball's billionaire old boys' club squirm under the heel of judicial might. Perhaps emboldened by Crump's mettle, Minnesota's higher courts upheld the decision, and just like that, baseball's contraction scam had less life than commissioner Bud Selig's hairpiece.
