BEST HAPPY HOUR - 2002
If it's happy hour all the time, can you ever achieve true happiness? That's the kind of philosophical riddle that begins to run through your mind after spending one too many happy hours perched on a bar stool at the venerable Poodle Club. There is no shortage of watering holes around town where the hours of discount alcohol seem to run right around the clock. It's practically impossible to order more than one drink at Liquor Lyle's, to cite one well-known example, without having your order doubled. But the Poodle Club gets the nod this year for its weekend happiness marathons. Every Saturday and Sunday this no-frills Lake Street institution chops its prices from noon to 6:00 p.m. During these six hours, domestic bottles are a mere $1.90, and most mixed drinks go for $2.50. If you're ever in need of an old-fashioned, knock-out-the-headlights weekend booze bender, the Poodle Club is your palace. Weeknights are almost as much of an endurance test, with drink specials running from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Just watch out you don't get too darn happy.
