The basement of the downtown Salvation Army thrift store puts a new sheen--well, make that a new patina--on the words cheap thrill. Sure, there's the usual complement of beater couches and mismatched bed frames. But there's also a series of long, troughlike tables, onto which staffers periodically dump boxes filled with glorious, unsorted junk. Every day! Nothing in the trough is priced, so you're offered the double delight of finding something good, and wondering what you'll pay for it when you get to the register. (Recent bargains: a 50-cent Dictaphone and a Louis Vuitton bag that went for two bits.) Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day except Sunday. Come early, come often, and come well-dosed with Claritin--the dust in this place is more plentiful than the melted Tupperware. But the hunt is exhilarating!
