BEST WINE AND LIQUOR STORE - 2001
There's an excellent selection of beer and spirits here, but the vino is where Surdyk's shines. Wine sales at this Minneapolis institution are intense exercises in cart-to-cart combat, as rabid, volume-buying shoppers furiously attempt to restock their cellars. To walk the aisles here is to travel the world of excellent wines, whether they originate from France, Spain, Chile, Australia, California, and anywhere else in the wine-producing world you can think of (as well as a bunch of places you can't). There are hundreds of fine, competitively priced wines here to match all budgets. The dark, ruby delights of a bottle of Rosemount Estate shiraz, for example, can be yours for a mere $9.99. Or you can wander past more port than you've ever seen in one place in your life, and adopt a very nice bottle of your very own for less than $20. Party planners and other long-range thinkers can save 10 percent off regularly priced fruit of the vine when buying by the case. Add to this the most knowledgeable staff in the area--ask one of the staff members for guidance, and your guests will think you're Robert M. Parker Jr.
