BEST COFFEE--BY THE POUND - 2001
Caffeine (read: coffee) remains the most desirable--and affordable--of all buzzes. And nowhere is this more evident than at Whole Foods. These upscale natural-foods grocery stores have a staggering selection of more than 30 different kinds of beans (all right, some are decaf), freshly roasted right on site, as well as an assortment of coffee presses, milk frothers, and other brewing accessories. But what really makes Whole Foods stand out among the other coffee song-and-dance routines around town is the bottom dollar. With a few exceptions, the beans in the bins--ranging from the usual French Roast and Mocha Java to Ethiopian Yergacheffe and Masai Blend--run $7.99 to $9.99 a pound. Still too steep for you? There are packaged blends such as Colombian Supremo and Pleasant Morning Buzz that run $9.99 while weighing in at a hefty pound and a half.
