You'll need a big glass of milk when you start biting the wings off one of Brian McElrath's butterflies. Filled with gooey, fudgey fillings, nuts, and berries, these chocolates and truffles seem almost too pretty to eat. Almost. We bought a selection and nearly came to blows over who got the last bite of the passion-fruit-flavored flower and the pecan-encrusted turtle. Long gone were the more exotic bonbons this local artisan has become known for; paradoxical wonders like zinfandel-balsamic-vinegar truffles and lavender-infused nibbles, and seasonal works of art such as red, raspberry-mousse-filled chocolate poinsettias for Christmas and chocolate champagne bottles for the New Year. Chocolatier McElrath doesn't sell his treats directly to the public, but you can find them at several locations, including Turtle Bread Company, Surdyk's Cheese Shop, Byerly's (in the bakery section), and Lunds.
