BEST BROKEN PROMISE

Being principled and passionate can win you Best Politician tributes, but if you're looking to be a Best of the Twin Cities multiple winner, you've got to be imaginative. Way back in 1990, the day after his upset victory over incumbent Republican Sen. Rudy Boschwitz, Paul Wellstone made a pledge to the citizens of Minnesota: He would serve no more than two terms. He renewed the vow during his 1996 rematch against Boschwitz, and won that one handily. But in January of this year, after having hemmed and hawed for a while, Wellstone officially announced his intention to seek a third term. Congratulations, Senator, on your second 2001 Best of the Twin Cities plaque!
