BEST ITALIAN GROCERY - 2000
Buon Giorno - CLOSED
Lynne Rossetto Kasper, public radio's high priestess of food, swears by this grocery, and with good reason: Buon Giorno is as close to Italy as you're bound to get in this neck of the prairie. If the assortment of Mediterranean staples ain't enough to make your head spin, get a load of the cheese case, where you can choose from a half-dozen kinds of Pecorino Romano alone. (There's also a buttery house-made pesto sauce that'll cure you of ever again trying to crush your own at home, and a variety of cured meats.) And, unlike every other metro grocer, Buon Giorno stocks wines within its walls--and they've got the best selection of Italian wines in town.
