Comments (0) BEST INDIE THEATER - 2000

Hidden Theatre

Let's start with a caveat: An indie theater is a company that does not have a permanent home. That said, we might still be misemploying the term indie by applying it to Hidden Theatre. Such is this six-year-old company's prowess that they are widely considered one of the best theaters in town of any size for contemporary work. This past year was no exception. Defying the safety-first ethic endemic to midsize theaters, the Hidden crew produced an entire season of local premieres, each featuring the uncluttered direction and top-notch acting that has become a hallmark of the peripatetic company. In August director Jay Dysart and former company member Brian Baumgartner brought us Rum and Vodka, an early one-person play by Irish wunderkind Conor McPherson. Then, in November, they delivered Kenneth Lonergan's slacker slice of life, This Is Our Youth, fresh from Broadway. The company rounded out the season with a world premiere: Isaac by Hidden Theatre associate and local playwright of note David Schulner. Under new artistic director Annelise Christ, this young and talented bunch won't remain hidden--or homeless--for much longer.
