Lyle's

Readers' Choice: Lyle's Bar and Restaurant

Yes, it smells like an ashtray. Yes, the décor is reminiscent of an American Legion hall circa 1985. And yes, that is Kid Rock blaring over the speakers. But sometimes conversation is superfluous. Sometimes you can't stomach another trendy, overpriced martini-and-cigar bar. And sometimes you need a blue-plate special of pork chops and a stiff screwdriver at ten o'clock in the morning (Lyle's first happy hour runs from 10:00 until 1:00 p.m. and features 2-for-1 on everything, including wine and a selection of moderately priced--$2.25 to $5--tap beers). For all those reasons, Lyle's, with its free herring, cheese snacks, and chicken wings, its mix of Lowry Hill workers and slumming hipsters, and its complete lack of pretension, is the only place to be. Lyle's may not have the happiest happy hour in town, but it remains among the most popular--and for good reason. Where else can you suck down 2-for-1 beers and plateful after plateful of cheese from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 to 10:00 p.m. daily and not feel the least bit self-conscious?
