Comments (0) BEST THRIFT STORE - 1999

Readers' Choice: Savers

In a faraway and distant land located somewhere on the Minneapolis-Columbia Heights border sits the Unique Thrift Store. Time loses all meaning when you pass through the doors of this kindly lit establishment and breathe in the musty, dusty air: It's as if you've fainted and awakened in your crazy grandmother's treasure-filled attic. With its constantly rotating stock of clothes and shoes, housewares, and bric-a-brac, this single-floor store in a strip mall makes the Salvation Army and Goodwill pale in comparison. If you are looking for collectors' albums or brand-name turntables, you've come to the right place. Need an old fake fireplace to entice your current "flame," or perhaps a rolling bar to get the evening going? Come on in. You'll also find Levi's for two dollars and leather jackets for five. Given the seemingly infinite racks of clothes to choose from, it's an easy feat to put together a whole new funky look for less than 20 bucks. The staff is sweet, they accept donations, and chances are you'll bump into a friend or two here, looking for the same, sure deals. But remember to wear clean underwear if you want to try on anything: The aisle is your dressing room.
