With an early-evening time slot given over to buff male dancers (7:30 to 9:30 p.m.), Friday and Saturday nights at the Payne Reliever can have the pitched air of a girls' happy hour gone loopy. Though attendance varies wildly, this mirror-walled, working-class St. Paul club can get rowdy on a crowded weekend, and its eight or so male dancers certainly earn their G-string dollars. Directly next-door at the Rockin' Eastside (both clubs occupy the same building), the legendary funk-R&B outfit Westside usually kicks off its standing house gig at 9:45 p.m., and the whirl of estrogen traditionally transfers itself over when the G-strings are being emptied in the dressing room. Call the Payne Reliever the perfect sex, booze, and rock 'n' roll medicine for any newly 21-year-old female friend whose wild side needs some exercise.
