Who didn't cringe when the NHL's newest franchise declared that it would be known simply as the "Wild"? Horrid franchise tags have become a dismaying trend in professional sport of late, as such dubious choices as the Rage, the Raptors, and the Mighty Ducks all attest. But the Wild is, without question, the worst of the bunch. Who is the Wild's rival supposed to be, anyway? The Tame? The Meek? The Civilized? As it turns out, the Minnesota Wild's only rival to date is, well, Minnesota Wild. Seems that Minnesota Specialty Crops Inc., a tiny company based in McGregor, has been using the name for years to market its line of jams, wines, and other culinary stuffs. Whoops. Time to call in the lawyers. Or, God willing, maybe just time to think of a better name. How about the North Stars?
