Comments (0) BEST PLACE TO SLOW DANCE - 1999

With an intimate supper-club atmosphere (dim), classic American soul food on the menu (greasy), and jazz veterans or dance DJs filling your ears (funky), Arnellia's is an essential spot for pleasure dining in St. Paul. But it's also among the few small supper joints with a genuine dance floor, complete with disco ball and multi-mirrored walls. The Wednesday-night DJs throw a few slow songs into the mix, but true lovers should check out local jazz veteran Billy Holloman's live ensemble on Sunday nights. Holloman mixes jazz, '60s soul, and modern R&B in a way that draws crowds young and old; there's no better place to ask your favorite grandparent for the next dance. And if dinner jazz is easy to find elsewhere, nothing beats a good, tight, live R&B band with real soul singers for softening up a date.
