Comments (0) BEST LOCAL BLUES BAND - 1999

Readers' Choice: Jonny Lang

Sisterhood and brotherhood are powerful, as the sibling roots rockers in Indigenous know well. These twentysomething blues enthusiasts from the Yankton Indian Reservation in South Dakota make a big, warm sound in their big, warm family. And if they aren't technically "of the Twin Cities," they play here so often you'd barely notice if they changed Zip Codes. For years, Indigenous has filled an array of local clubs, from O'Gara's to Lee's, with a brand of Texas boogie enlivened by the piercing guitar solos of Mato Nanji. The young ax-man's Stevie Ray Vaughan fixation is apparent, but his volcanic gurgle is far more expressive than the late Texan's. And the band is never better than when it's thumping through one of Mato's originals. Perhaps, Clapton willing, Indigenous may thump into the Jonny Lang-size mass audience they deserve.
