Until a few months ago, we couldn't confirm that such a breed existed. Compared to their stiletto-heeled sisters...er, brothers, the elusive drag king is difficult to spot in his natural habitat. Not so for Heather Spear, the Gentleman King, who was often spied playing with local bands Deformo and the Shepherd Kings, as well as directing her own herd of kings at the Bryant-Lake Bowl in Dykes Do Drag. Descriptively subtitled "Gender Blending at the Bowl," Spear's energetic and provocative drag revue featured other notable local masters of androgyny including Sarah Gordon (The Glam King) and Zoe Rabaglia (The Queen). With fond memories of an evening of intriguing and subversive gender exploration, we look forward to future Spear sightings.
