Comments (0) BEST DANCER - 1998

Dancers tend to be as nomadic as Bedouins, but Denise Armstead and Christine Maginnis have made Minneapolis the home-sweet-home of their Zenon Dance Company for more than 15 years. During that time, the pair's repertoire has encompassed countless variations of modern and jazz techniques--no mean feat of versatility for any hoofer. Armstead, who first came on the scene with Rezone and Just Jazz Dancers in the early '80s, is a pensive mover whose determined physical (and inner) strength belies her slight stature. By contrast, Maginnis (also seen regularly with Christopher Watson Dance) flows like an athletic dynamo, able to cut through space with an enviable confidence. Together, these artists possess the kind of maturity that only comes from years of carefully honing--and loving--their craft.
