Comments (0) BEST DANCE CLUB - 1998

Readers' Choice: First Avenue

The Saloon wins by default. This club avoids the rubbernecking vibe of the Gay 90's; the strangely undanceable music selection of First Avenue; the stifling meat-marketeering of Tropix; and the urgent flashiness of the Quest. What it does offer is consistently acceptable, if not always exceptional, dance music in a suitably dark space with flashing lights and skinny young people--all the basics. And although gayer crowds can be found in the Cities, the Saloon still maintains a strong queer-friendly vibe that strikes a respectful balance between hooking up and just plain getting your groove on. (It should be noted, however, that as of this writing, weekend nights were attracting some clueless and aggressive straight boys after 1 a.m.; watch out, girls.)
