Comments (0) BEST BLUES RADIO PROGRAM - 1998

Host Pete Lee probably wouldn't even think of his wonderful weekly program as a blues show. It does, after all, cover everything from vocal jazz to jump blues, to great pre-rock 'n' roll R&B, and many of the historical wrinkles in between. That's what makes Bop Street so great. Like any great bluesman, Pete picks his favorite songs from the (grand) children of W.C. Handy, Fats Waller, and Bessie Smith--and then mixes them for a juke-joint dance from an imaginary evening that spans half a century. Here the Dominoes do the deed with Big Mama Thorton, and Joe Williams is as rock 'n' roll as Fats Domino. Take our advice: Find a free Wednesday afternoon, sit down with a pen and paper, write down the name of everything you hear; then go to the store and stock up your own juke joint.
