When it comes to cities that never sleep, ours isn’t among them. If you want proof, just try to find an open kitchen at 3 a.m. on a weekend. While a late-night meal to sop up the suds might be de rigueur in many big cities, here we tend to tuck in early, forage for leftovers, beg the pizza guy to make one last stop, or go to bed hungry. Except, that is, if you’re keen enough to remember the humble Uptown Diner. Thursday through Sunday, all night long, you can venture in for a cheeseburger, fries, and a malt to knock out your hangover before it comes over to hang. This bustling hive of late-nighters is a sight to behold in the wee hours of the morning: Hungry folks of all stripes descend upon the one beacon of light on the dark streets of Minneapolis and feast on pancakes, hash browns, eggs, and grilled cheese—all while the rest of the town is sleeping.
