Tuesday nights at the Dubliner Pub might be the most beautiful in America. There’s a band playing traditional Irish music on the stage. St. Paul’s finest are on the dance floor, practicing the steps of their ancestors. Approximately 12,000 photos of John F. Kennedy adorn the walls, reminding you that we didn’t always have buffoons for presidents. And Patrick Curry is behind the bar. Think of him as an old-school Renaissance man. Yes, he delivers your drinks with swiftness. And, yes, he can perfect-pour a Guinness with shamrock atop. But he’s also the quintessential welcoming face behind the command post, a bartender capable of waxing with wisdom on everything from literature to the highest issues of the day. He’s kind, thoughtful, and empathetic, packaged in a live-and-let-live personality. He may be the guy delivering your beer, but he’s also the man reminding you that intellect and goodness remain in this world. And they’re on display every Tuesday night.
