When Edina’s leading citizens say their prayers at night, there’s one common entreaty: “Dear Lord, please allow us to someday be as cool as South St. Paul.” This southeastern suburb offers a fetching alternative for people priced out of the cities. As a former meatpacking center, South St. Paul contains none of the artificial flavoring of its more affluent cousins to the south. And while it’s but a stone’s throw from downtown, it also offers room to breathe. Residents report waking up to wild turkeys, woodpeckers, and deer in the yard. Best of all, it has yet to be overrun by gentrifiers. Homes still routinely sell for well under $200,000.
