St. Paul resident Gwen Jorgensen is an American pioneer. She won America’s first triathlon gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. She knifed through almost a mile-long swim, pedaled 25 miles, and ran more than six miles in well under two hours. That performance on the world stage gives credence to the argument that the planet’s best athlete, male or female, lives in our midst. What makes Jorgensen our Minnesota Sports Center highlight champ isn’t just her Olympic gold. It’s her backstory. She blew a tire during the bike portion of the 2012 Olympics, finishing in 38th place. Jorgensen used that disappointment as fuel to win four consecutive World Triathlon Series races in 2014, paving her way to a world championship the following year. The rest, as they say, is history.
