Few chefs have carried the baton for dietary needs like Tamara Brown of Sassy Spoon, and even fewer have done it so deliciously. Starting out in a big, very pink food truck, the nutritionist-turned-cook was finally able to open a brick-and-mortar space for her gluten-free kitchen in early 2015, where she’s been cranking out celiac-friendly fare ever since. Brown definitely embraces veg on her menu, but you’ll find many permutations of meat as well, plus lots of rendered lard (a healthy fat that Brown loves), pork cracklins as an ice cream topping, and cookie dough for dessert. Mothers of children with celiac disease love the place because there’s not a thing off-limits for little ones. They can heave a sigh of relief and then toast with an ice-cold gluten-free beer.
