It was nearly impossible to get a doughnut when Bogart’s opened its first brick-and-mortar space in 2014. That’s because lawyer turned baker Anne Rucker and her crew make these delicious sugar gems from a brioche recipe that requires overnight planning. So when they’re gone, they’re gone for the day. Three years later, thanks to a second shop on Nicollet Mall — and presumably less panicked doughnut hoarding — those orange boxes filled with sweet rings of goodness are easier to come by. And holy crap, were they worth the wait. The brown-butter glazed is the perfect balance of sugar, bready carbs, and buttery richness; the Nutella-stuffed bread pillows are a dream come true; and the vanilla-bean buttercream with its eggy filling, fluffy bread, and dusting of granulated sugar is surely ambrosia bestowed upon us from the gods. For those who prefer doughnuts of the cake variety, the lavender doughnut wakes up the tastebuds and the multi-colored sprinkle doughnuts are guaranteed to elevate your mood.
