Walker Art Center
You’d think that the Walker Art Center’s new lobby off Vineland Place has always been there. The brand-new, open, cheery gathering space offers a warm welcome to museum visitors. The Walker’s new restaurant, Esker Grove, is another addition, with delicious food and drink from the creative mind of chef Doug Flicker (and there’s the added luxury of sipping your cocktail against the backdrop of Frank Big Bear’s new collage, Multiverse #10). The Walker also triumphed this year with the opening of its much-anticipated Merce Cunningham exhibition, a collection of dance ephemera including sets, photography, costumes, and even live performances; Chris Larson’s collaboration with Grant Hart resulted in a rock ’n’ roll exploration of memory; and “Question the Wall Itself” turned the world of interior design on its head, examining how decor and the use of space can impact culture and politics. We can’t wait for the reopening of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden this spring, which will include a variety of new sculptures and old favorites.
