Best Theater Troupe
“Best Theater Troupe” is not the same as “Most Consistent Theater Troupe,” but even last summer’s cheesy 600 Years had a weirdly undeniable energy that was a testament to this group’s skill at building collaborative, self-contained worlds. Sandbox turned Park Square’s Boss Thrust Stage into a boxing ring for the elegiac Queens, then used that same space to get inside the mind of game-show addict Michael Larson for the character study Big Money. With Derek Lee Miller stepping aside as artistic director, the 13-year-old company is currently exploring new ways of structuring its organization to give the creators of each show maximum room to roam. Local theater fans will be watching with interest to see what the future holds for these perpetually curious creators.
