James Sewell Ballet's 'Killer Pig'

In the James Sewell Ballet’s performance of Killer Pig, by Israeli choreographers Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, six dancers sampled global styles including ballet, Japanese Butoh, Israeli gaga, and classical Indian dance. The entire ensemble worked as an interconnected unit, rendering the dance’s eccentric intricacies with relish. They undulated with percussive ooze as if detonating gel-filled grenades, transforming from creaturely and wild to spare and classical in a beat. Sleek and sensuous, they strutted like prize racehorses or models marching down the runway. Individual dancers showed their stuff: Laurie Nielsen’s fluid spine and strident sensuality give her a dramatic, femme fatale allure, while Eve Schulte’s Amazonian grandeur suggested tragic Greek heroines. Shohei Iwahama’s mercurial wit and protean moves made him the Puck of the pack. Most impressively, these versatile dancers showed the many directions a ballet-trained body can go.
