Over the years, three generations of humble book lovers have run this basement murder-mystery shop with a wonderful sense of pun. Pat Frovarp and Gary Schulze, who first met and later married in Once Upon a Crime, managed the store together for 14 years in a sort of fairy tale variation on the theme. A sign on the door welcomes "plots with guns." The website is bullet-ridden with 1990s computer graphics that speak to the store's low-tech, pure-to-paper dedication. Still, the independent bookstore business is a quixotic undertaking these days, and in March Frovarp and Schulze passed the torch to another couple who will no doubt keep the nationally renowned shop's doors open to debut Minnesota authors as well as New York Times best-seller titles. One week after the sale, Schulze died of leukemia. Used, but very much loved, Once Upon a Crime is an Uptown story that has many more chapters to go before it sleeps.
