Being a solid neighborhood bar is harder than it sounds. It must satisfy all without really trying too hard. Depending on the hour, Shamrocks is a place you could bring your kid for a burger, or get ripped while playing pulltabs — without feeling scuzzy either time. The Irish-ish sports bar peddles the same gooey, not-too-fussy burgers as jointly owned institution the Nook, and they hold their own in a "chef-driven" world. Here old-timers with bowling bags and twentysomethings with corporate badges commingle over Summits, trivia, and $2 burgers (8:30-11 p.m. Mondays). This bibulous bastion's community pride runs as deep as the 1988 Cretin-Durham Hall state championship hockey jersey hanging on the wall.
