Home of the best new restaurant in St. Paul (Saint Dinette), the best farmers market (St. Paul Farmers' Market), the best pizza (Big River Pizza), and the best new bar (Dark Horse), Lowertown is forcing St. Paul detractors to take a second look. This former warehouse district along the Mississippi River has always had a cool industrial edge to it. But Lowertown's dining clout has gotten a tremendous boost of late. Within the last year, celebrated chef Lenny Russo opened Heartland Wine Bar to vend posh sandwiches and glasses of rosé for a refined meal before a St. Paul Saints game. The owners of the perennially popular Muddy Waters in Uptown Minneapolis opened their Dark Horse Bar and Eatery to serve one of the most eclectic menus in town. The guys behind Strip Club Meat and Fish opened Saint Dinette, purveyor of killer cocktails and bologna sandwiches. And Handsome Hog, a contemporary Southern restaurant, is now smoking, saucing, and dishing up authentic barbecue. Within a few blocks you can get some of the best sandwiches, burgers, pizza, produce, pork, bar food, and cocktails in the Twin Cities. Still think St. Paul is just the sleepy seat of government? Visit Lowertown and be pleasantly surprised by how wrong you are.
