The road Matt Latterell took to arrive at the songs that would make up his stunning new album, Phase & Field, was long and winding. The singer-songwriter and hardworking sideman moved back home to Foley, Minnesota, four years ago, but gradually returned to the area following a series of breakups, bringing with him an impressive batch of nearly 60 songs inspired by his experiences. Latterell whittled those tracks down to 10 emotionally wrought, impeccably structured songs, with each number fueled by his plaintive vocals and Americana-laden arrangements. Latterell leaned on many of his talented friends in the local music community — as well as a generous grant he received from the Central Minnesota Arts Board — who were happy to welcome him back to Minneapolis. The gorgeous songs on Phase & Field reflect the long, fractured journey he took to get here, and the pain and wisdom he experienced along the way.
