Twin Cities music fans have known of Lizzo's prodigious talents for years now. But after circling the globe with the dynamic, self-assured hip-hop anthems featured on her vibrant new album, Big Grrrl Small World, the locally based MC returned to a sold-out First Ave in February to celebrate. The rapturous audience was ready to party, as Lizzo continuously received boisterous between-song ovations from her adoring fanbase. The transformation Lizzo underwent from her time as a role player with the Chalice to the flat-out superstar she is today has been a pleasure to witness, and the local hip-hop fans who supported her from the start take pride in seeing her blossom on the music world's biggest stages. This triumphant homecoming gig, which went down weeks before she was signed to Atlantic Records, was confirmation that Lizzo is making some of the biggest, freshest waves in rap, as well as a celebration of the deeply talented Twin Cities hip-hop community.
