Best Nontraditional Gallery Space
House of Balls
For more than 20 years, Allen Christian has invited visitors to step inside his House of Balls and experience a world of strange, fascinating, and awe-inspiring works of art. The unique energy emanating from House of Balls can best be described as off-putting but captivating. As you approach the anti-gallery, you are greeted by the giant, man-powered Pedal-Bear (which is also often spotted at the Art Shanty Projects) and hand-carved metal statues that were created from old air ducts that Christian pulled out of the building during renovations. Inside, Christian showcases pieces created from a number of nontraditional materials, including animal skulls, abandoned bicycles, and bowling balls. Thanks to his new, larger working space/gallery on the West Bank, it's safe to say the House of Balls will continue to feed off the energy of its visitors and the surrounding community for years to come.
