D'Angelo and the Vanguard at First Avenue
After disappearing from the music scene for 14 years following the chart-topping success of 2000's Voodoo, D'Angelo made a celebrated comeback with Black Messiah. After his intimate 2013 show with ?uestlove gave us a glimpse of the strength of his new songs, D'Angeolo brought his full Vanguard backing band back to First Ave to properly roll through his scintillating new material. The soulful showman played to the crowd, looking stylish and totally in command of the room, while his band gave a vibrant edge to his R&B jams. After shirking the spotlight for so long, D'Angelo appeared totally at ease, delivering a heartfelt, impassioned performance that showcased his estimable songwriting talents and undeniable star quality. Let's just hope that this singular modern artist continues to share his musical gifts with his dedicated fans for years to come. Because the fractured world — as well as First Avenue on that sultry September night — needed Black Messiah when it arrived, and we crave whatever D'Angelo has planned next.
