Since 2005, the Art Shanty Projects has been bringing joy to the frozen lakes of Minnesota in the dead of winter. In 2015, event organizers took a year off, but they had a plan to come back bigger and better than ever as a nonprofit. In 2016, 19 shanties, ice-fishing-style shacks with an artsy twist, took to the frozen lake for a month of shenanigans. There were shanties that served up treats from local chefs, a dance party shanty, and a shanty featuring frozen native plants (which could also be tasted). Outside, the Pedal Bears roamed the ice, and Art Cars paraded each weekend. May the Art Shanties thrive even more as the fest enters its next decade.
