A recent City Pages cover story arrived at a grim conclusion: The jukebox is dead. Well, it's mostly dead, and the culprit is TouchTunes, those soulless and ubiquitous internet-powered machines that dominate bar scenes worldwide. There are a few holdouts, however, and 19 Bar is among those still paying upkeep costs on the classic jukebox. The treasured Twin Cities gay bar keeps its juke stocked with surplus personality, as longtime bartender Andrew Beirl lovingly burns/loads mix CDs into the neon antiquity. Among the handpicked cuts: Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, 4 Non Blondes, Kesha, the Eurythmics, and other favorites of the Loring Park barroom. The 19 Bar's jukebox may not be steeped in the same lore as the CC Club's, but even the latter tavern gave in to TouchTunes, so major props to the 19 Bar for keeping its musical character alive.
