This was a year of accolades for Twin Cities bakeries. Steve Horton of Rustica was once again a semi-finalist for a James Beard Award. John Kraus of Patisserie 46 placed third in the international baking competition Coupe du Monde. Meanwhile a quiet contender for some of the best baked goods in the Twin Cities carries on right under our noses. Sarah Botcher's Black Walnut Bakery makes a weekly stop at One on One Bicycle Studio downtown to greet her Saturday-morning regulars. They come for the caramelized kouign-amann, the Jenga blocks of fine-crumbed espresso shortbread, creamy lemon tarts, and cracking loaves of country bread. Her menu changes, but the quality never wavers, and as with any pop-up enterprise, once the goods are gone, they're gone.
