No one expected to hear Miley Cyrus at Rock the Garden. No one, that is, except Jeremy Messersmith. He jumped, never asking why. Aided by the Laurels String Quartet and his bruising live ensemble, Messersmith swung "Wrecking Ball" at about 10,000 hearts and shattered 'em all over the Walker's grounds. Witnessing the hipper-than-thou crowd slowly and reluctantly soak up the pleasures of this mainstream anthem was as entertaining as the song itself. The effect proved powerful enough to rival his previous live cover highlight, Robyn's "Call Your Girlfriend," and the Cyrus classic made its way into his sets this past December.
