The 1029 has a long-held reputation as a cop bar, but stop by on a Friday or Saturday night and its karaoke popularity is even more apparent. For starters, the participants — many of them regulars — take it very seriously, often giving their own takes on songs, rather than trying to imitate whichever artist they're, ahem, covering. It's also one of the few spots where participating in karaoke doesn't equal "trying to one-up my friends with the dumbest song I can find." The selection of songs is seemingly endless, covering every genre and era imaginable, though the median age of the crowd usually dictates that the night will be heavy on '90s alt-rock and R&B. If you arrive after 10 p.m., be prepared to wait a bit to get your song in, but if karaoke is your thing, the 1029 is essential.
